Liverpool Film Festival 2020 took place 23rd-25th October.
Due to the situation surrounding COVID-19 for the first time LIVIFF took place online, with screenings held across the weekend through the LIVIFF website.
The line-up of films was made up of narrative feature films, documentaries, short films, animations, experimental and music video and showcased some of the best filmmaking talent from around the world.
Highlights included the coming of age 18 TO PARTY, directed by Jeff Roda, set in 1984 the film saw a group of teenagers grappling with a series of life changing events including suicide, absentee parents, and UFO sightings and Polish film 1800 GRAMS, about the life of a woman who looks for families for orphaned children. Portuguese film SURDINE, about a man trying to move on with his life after the death of his wife and GIANTS BEING LONELY, a drama about three high schoolers looking to escape their rural existence.
Documentaries screened included the Showtime documentary CITIZEN BIO, an in-depth exploration of the nascent Biohacking movement and the emerging phenomenon of the “Citizen Scientist”, and INTO THE STORM, about a troubled teenager from the barrios of Lima who looks to realise his dream of becoming a pro surfer and raise his family out of poverty. Award winning documentary KNOTS: A FORCED MARRIAGE STORY, about the legal forced and child marriages that are happening all across the U.S closed out the festival on the Sunday evening.
There was a selection of over fifty short films, including the festivals opening night screening. Included in the selection was THE LAST MERMAID, about a vape smoking, whisky drinking Scottish mermaid, a middle-aged woman struggled to keep her high-pressure job while tending to her elderly mother in RUTH, animation BOLERO STATION, office workers and their humdrum lives burst into life with poetry in OFFICE SONG, in CHRISTY a 16-year-old school-dropout interviewed for a job and a work-weary archaeologist faced a head-on collision in YIELD. There was a also time for a Documentary Short session that included BEING MICHAEL and ROLLER GIRLS BEIRUT. All that being said, we can not wait to return in full physical indie film fest swing at our partner venues of the Everyman and Odeon in November 2021!
